Skills Transfer...
There are three basic ways in which
skills can be transferred within an organisation:
-
From one person
to another (on-the-job training, or peer support)
-
From one work
context to another – using the skills needed in one department
to ‘cross-fertilise’ another department’s thinking or operations
-
Task-related transfer – here an
ability acquired for the performance of a task may be used in
the performance of a different task
Skills can be transferred into an
organisation from external bodies or individuals. Example include
cross-organisational mentoring, and the creative use of an interim
manager.
Used creatively, skills transfer is an
important part of training and development. Few organisations
understand their skills base in sufficient detail to understand how
skills can be transferred internally. This understanding can be
achieved by a skills needs analysis.
